Descansos

Descansos, meaning “resting places” in Spanish, are roadside shrines most commonly found in the American Southwest, Mexico, and parts of Latin America. They function as cultural signposts, reminding passersby of the fragility of life and the dangers of the road. These shrines personalize otherwise anonymous tragedies and foster empathy, caution, and awareness.

Some have names and a story, others are a simple memorial marking the place where life changing event happened.
